Nine ways to promote a small business online with no ad budget, in the order worth doing them, and why all of them should point to one address you control.

You promote a small business online with no budget when every channel leads to one address you control, and when you add one channel at a time instead of five at once. The nine ways below are in the order worth doing them, from the page everyone points to, all the way to the monthly update for the people who asked to hear from you. Most take under an hour, and none requires a website or an ad.

In short: promotion without a budget is work on three things: being easy to find, having what people find convince them, and not losing the people who were interested. First one page with your name, your work and your proof. Then Google and the Business Profile, the bio, WhatsApp or text, the local groups, the signature and the QR code. And finally a list of people who asked to hear from you, and one message a month.

Tom is a carpenter in Austin. He opened a Facebook business page, an Instagram profile, tried TikTok for two weeks, and pays someone to post. His inquiries still come by word of mouth. When a happy client sends his number to a friend, the friend looks him up, finds four half-empty profiles, and is not sure it is the same Tom. Tom's problem is not too little promotion. It is promotion scattered across channels, none of which leads to one place.

Why promoting a small business starts with one address, before any channel

Every channel online, a post, a story, a business profile, a recommendation in a group, does one thing: it brings a person to a moment of curiosity. What happens in that moment depends on where they land. If they land on a profile showing your latest post, the curiosity ends there. If they land on a page that shows who you are, what you have done, what others say and how to reach you, the curiosity becomes an inquiry.

So the first step in any promotion plan is that address: one page of your own that every other channel points to. It is also the only place where you can measure what works, because every visit arrives there. What is branding explains what the page needs in order to convince, and digital marketing, in the small-business version, is mostly making sure every road leads to it.

Nine ways to promote a small business online, in the right order

  1. One page everyone points to. A photo, a sentence about what you do and for whom, work, two or three testimonials, and one button to get in touch. On MyVisito that is the digital business card: you tell the AI assistant about yourself, it drafts the card, and the card gets its own short address. There is a free plan.
  2. A Google Business Profile with reviews. The Business Profile shows you on the map and in search with a phone number, hours and reviews, even if you work by service area with no storefront. Three real reviews are worth more than any post.
  3. Showing up on Google for your name. Whoever got a recommendation searches you by name. How to show up on Google when someone searches your name covers it in six steps.
  4. A complete messaging profile with a link. Most inquiries to a local business arrive by text or WhatsApp. A photo, a description with the same sentence, hours, and the link to your page in the description. A status update once a week with one piece of work, for people who already have you saved.
  5. One post a week that shows work, not you. On Instagram or Facebook, once a week, a finished job with two lines: what the client's problem was and what changed. The link in the bio leads to the page. The link in bio for a business explains why a page and not a list of links.
  6. Answering in local groups, without advertising. In the neighborhood group someone asks "anyone know a carpenter?" several times a week. Whoever answers other questions patiently, "this is how you check if the door is warped", becomes the name people mention when someone asks. Direct ads in groups get deleted; help gets remembered.
  7. An email signature and a QR code on everything physical. The email signature with your name, sentence and link goes out dozens of times a day. A QR code on the van, the receipt, the sign at the entrance, leads to the same page. A digital business card with a QR code says where the code really gets scanned.
  8. A partnership with a neighboring business. The carpenter and the interior designer, the esthetician and the hair salon, the accountant and the lawyer. Each recommends the other, with the link, to every client who fits. It is the cheapest channel there is, and it works because the recommendation comes from a person.
  9. A list of people who asked to hear from you, and one message a month. Everyone who inquired, scanned or bought and wanted to stay in touch joins your list. Once a month you send one thing worth opening. How to build a customer list from zero covers the consent and the rhythm.

How to know which of the nine works for you

Two ways, both cheap. First: ask every new inquiry "how did you find me?" and write the answer down. After a month you see a picture. Second: your page. If every channel leads to it, it knows where each visit came from: WhatsApp, Instagram, Google, a scan. On MyVisito the card's analytics show that by source, and also how many visits turned into an inquiry.

The rule that prevents waste: add one channel, give it a month, check the number, and only then add the next. Whoever opens five channels together does not know which one brought the client, and abandons all of them after two months.

When it is worth starting to pay for ads

After the page converts on its own. Paid advertising brings people to your page faster; it does not turn a page that fails to convince into one that does. If one in twenty visits from the free channels becomes an inquiry, an ad will double the visits and double the inquiries. If zero in twenty become an inquiry, the ad doubles the zero. PPC for a small business explains what has to be ready before the first paid click.

Three mistakes that waste a small business's time online

Opening every channel at once. Five half-empty profiles say less than one full one. One channel, a month, a number, the next.

Writing about yourself instead of the client. "Quality professional carpentry" says nothing to someone who needs a wardrobe. "A built-in wardrobe for a kids' room, measured to installed in three weeks" says everything. Testimonials and a portfolio explains how to let clients tell it for you.

Sending people to a profile instead of a page. A profile shows your latest post; a page shows you. If the bio link already gets taps and no inquiries, these seven fixes show where it breaks. And if you are wondering whether all this needs a website: digital business card or a website?.

Frequently asked questions

Which channel is best for promoting a small business?

The channel where your clients already are, and only once there is a page it leads to. For a local service business that is almost always messaging, the Google Business Profile and referrals, with Instagram after them. A business that sells to the eye, food, design, beauty, gets more from Instagram.

How long does it take to see results from organic promotion?

The direct channels, messaging and groups, bring an inquiry within days. Google and the Business Profile take weeks to months to gather reviews and position. The monthly list starts paying back after three to six months, and from then on it is the steadiest channel.

Do I need a website to promote a business online?

Not for the promotion described here. One page that presents you, opens on a phone and updates in one tap does the job of a landing page. A website becomes necessary when there is a large catalog or a lot of written content.

How much time a week should a small business spend on promotion?

One to two hours, after the setup: one post, a few answers in groups, a status update, and a look at the inquiry list. Once a month another hour for the message to the list. Whoever spends more than that without seeing the numbers improve has probably opened too many channels.
