How to show up on Google when someone searches your name

What happens when someone types your name into Google, why the first result is your real business card, and six steps to control it with no website.

You do not need a website to show up on Google when someone searches your name. You need one page with your name and profession in its title, that you control and have chosen to make searchable, plus a few other places that mention you with the same spelling: a Google Business Profile, your LinkedIn and Instagram bios, and two or three real reviews. Google connects the dots on its own. The only question is which dots it finds.

In short: when someone searches your name, the first result is your business card, whether you chose it or not. To choose it: one page with your name and profession in the title, set to appear in search; the same spelling of your name everywhere; a Google Business Profile if you have a location or a service area; real reviews; and a few sites that link to you. It takes a few weeks and costs nothing.

A client of Emma's, an interior designer, recommended her to a friend. The friend typed "Emma Hart interior designer" into Google and found three things: a Facebook post from 2019, a dentist with the same name, and a LinkedIn profile with a blurry photo. She did not write. Emma had done nothing wrong; she had simply let Google decide what to say about her.

What shows up today when someone searches your name, and how to check properly

Check in a private browsing window, so Google does not show you your own history, and in three forms: the name alone, the name with the profession, and the name with the city. Next to every result on the first page, ask two questions: is this me? And if so, would I want a new client to see this first?

The results usually fall into three kinds. Social profiles, which Google likes because they are current and linked. Old mentions: an article, a post, a former employer's site. And other people with your name. What almost never appears, unless you arranged it, is one page that presents you the way you want. A results page for a personal name is usually a contest between things other people wrote.

Why the first result for your name is your real business card

Because it opens at the exact moment of decision. A new client almost always arrives through a recommendation, and they check that recommendation on a phone, in the evening, within a minute. They do not read three pages of results. They tap the first or the second, look for ten seconds, and decide whether to write. Personal branding starts with one page describes that minute from their side.

The first result also sets the price you can ask. Someone who finds a page with work, testimonials and a clear sentence about what you do arrives at the conversation nearly convinced. Someone who finds a 2019 post and a dentist arrives with doubt, and people with doubt compare prices. What is branding explains why that difference is worth money.

Six steps to show up on Google without a website

  1. One page with your name and profession in its title, that you control. "Emma Hart, interior designer, Portland" in the page title, a photo, a sentence, work, testimonials and a way to get in touch. Google needs a page that is entirely about you to show it first. On MyVisito the digital business card is such a page, and it enters search only when you turn that on in the card's settings; by default it stays out of Google, because not everyone wants to be found.
  2. The same spelling of your name, everywhere. Emma Hart, not sometimes "Emma H." and sometimes a maiden name. Google recognizes a person through consistent repetition. Pick one form of the name, and decide whether the profession sits next to it.
  3. A Google Business Profile, if you have a location or a service area. The Business Profile is the card Google shows beside the results, with a phone number, hours and reviews. Someone who works from home and travels to clients can open one by service area, without exposing an address.
  4. LinkedIn and Instagram bios with the same words. The first line of every profile is what Google shows under the link. "Interior designer for small apartments, Portland" works there too. The link in bio for a business explains where the link from the profile should lead.
  5. Two or three real reviews. On the Google Business Profile if you have one, and on your own page always. Reviews with a name and substance are what Google and the client both trust. Testimonials and a portfolio covers how to ask.
  6. Links from places that mention you. A professional association's site, a client's "our team" page, a local article, a conference program. Every such link to your page tells Google that this page really is you. Your email signature with the link helps too, through everyone who forwards the email.

The order matters: the page first, because without it there is nowhere for the other five to point.

What to do about an old result, or someone else with your name

An old result of yours, a post or a profile you abandoned, is better updated than deleted: change the photo and the first line to match the rest, or add a link to your current page. A result you cannot change simply sinks when stronger pages sit above it. Google also offers a tool to request removal of results with personal information, but it is meant for sensitive data, not an old post.

Another person with your name is the best reason to attach the profession to the name everywhere. "Emma Hart interior designer" separates you from the dentist, and it is also what the client will type after the recommendation, because they heard the name together with the profession.

How long it takes, and how you know it worked

A new page usually appears on Google within days to weeks, and climbs slowly as links and reviews accumulate. Check once a month, in the same three search forms, in a private window. The sign that it worked is not only the position: it is clients writing "I saw your page" instead of "someone gave me your number".

If your page counts visits, you see it in numbers: how many people came from Google, against WhatsApp or Instagram. On MyVisito that sits in the card's analytics by source. And if you want more than your own name, meaning to appear for "interior designer Portland" too, that is a different world of promotion, and how to promote a small business online starts there. Digital business card or a website? helps decide whether the next step is a website.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my name not show up on Google at all?

Because there is no public page that is entirely about you, or your profiles are closed to outside viewers. A private Instagram, a LinkedIn with no photo and no headline, and a digital card kept out of search give Google nothing to show. One open page with your name and profession in the title fixes that.

Should I build a website just to show up on Google for my name?

No. For a personal-name search one good page is enough, and a website that is never updated actually hurts, because it shows old information. A website is worth it when there is a lot of content or a catalog, and that is a different story.

What do I do when a famous person with my name takes all the results?

Attach the profession and the city to your name everywhere, and ask clients to recommend you with the profession ("Emma Hart, the interior designer"). On that combined search you can be first even when you cannot be on the name alone.

Does my digital business card appear on Google automatically?

On MyVisito, no: appearing in search is a choice you turn on per card, and the default is to stay out. Whoever wants to be found for their name turns it on, and whoever prefers a page reached only through a link leaves it off. What is a digital business card explains both modes.
